# Speech Practice

When I was in college, I tutored middle school students.

As I helped them study, I listened to their concerns and we grew close.

It was rewarding work.

It was also nice to make some cash.

I graduated a long time ago, so that tutoring experience is just a memory now.

But recently, an acquaintance asked me to give her daughter private lessons.

Her English grades were lagging behind compared to her other subjects, so I was asked to giver her English lessons.

I did major in English literature.

But I hadn't taught anyone for a long time.

It weighed heavily on me.

At first, I politely declined.

But my acquaintance practically begged.

I ended up teaching her daughter.

The student was up to the task, and her grades improved a lot.

My acquaintance has asked me to teach the girl's little brother, too.

I'm not sure what I'll do.

1. listen to someone's concerns
As I helped them study, I listened to their concerns.
It's not my job to listen to your concerns.
We always try to listen to other's concerns.

It was also nice to make some cash.
I worked at a coffee shop to make some cash.
I worked part time during summer and winter breaks to make some cash.

3. up to the task
The student was up to the task, and her grades improved a lot.
If you're not up to the task, I'll ask someone else.

I worried at first, but she was definitely up to the task.

After a lot of practice, I felt up to the task.

I don't know whether he is up to the task.

# Dialogue Practice

A: Have you ever tutored anyone?

B: Of course. I taught a bunch of high schoolers when I was in college.

A: Wow, you must have a talent for teaching.

B: No, I don't think so. It just sort of happened.

A: Did the kids' grades improve?

B: I helped them improve their study habits. So yeah, their grades did go up.

A: I'm glad to hear that. Do you still keep in touch with your students?

B: No, we've lost contact. I suppose they're all grown up and married now.

A: 잘됐네.
