# STEP 1

 

Talk about holiday customs for the Lunar New Year Holiday.

 

The Lunar New Year Holiday is one of Korea's biggest holidays.

For ages, it has been a custom for families to gather and eat holiday foods together.

Rice cake soup is the most important Lunar New Year dish.

People in Korea believe that eating the dish makes them age a year.

Paying respects to ancestors is also a holiday tradition.

Lots of people travel to their hometowns during the holiday.

The highways get backed up badly.

It's also very difficult to score the tickets for trains or flights.

# Pattern Practice

 

1) for ages 예로부터 오랫동안

For ages, it has been a custom for families to gather and eat holiday foods.

People have eaten at this restaurant for ages.

We have had this car for ages.

 

2) get backed up 막히다

The highways get backed up badly.

The road had gotten backed up because of an accident.

The toilet got backed up because I used too much toilet paper.

 

3) score a ticket 표를 어렵게 구하다

It's also very difficult to score tickets for trains or flights.

I was able to score tickets at the last minute.

The movie was so popular that it was hard to score tickets.

 

# STEP 2

 

Talk about what your family does during the Lunar New Year Holiday.

 

Our family travels to my parents' house on the eve of the Lunar New Year.

My little brother's family also visits.

We make holiday food together, and also eat together.

We catch up with family members and have a good time.

Children offer a New Year's bow to grown-ups and recieve pocket money.

We spend the night at my parents' house and eat breakfast there.

Then we go to my in-laws' house to meet my father- and mother-in-law.

My sister-in-law is married and has a family, but my brother-in-law is still unmarried.

We stay overnight there, and then return home.

# Pattern Practice

 

1) catch up with / ~와 밀린 이야기를 하다

We catch up with family members and have a good time.

I met an old friend and caught up with her in a cafe.

I would love to catch up with you, but I have to go.

 

2) spend the night = stay overnight / 하룻밤을 묶다

We spend the night at my parents' house and eat breakfast there.

We stay overnight there, and then return home.

We only ate at the hotel, and didn't spend the night there.

 

3) father/mother in-law 시아버지/시어버니, 장인/장모

Then we go to my in-laws' house to meet my father- and mother-in-law.

My mother-in-law gives me a lot of good advice.

Her father-in-law doesn't say much.

 

# Expressions of the Day

 

He gave me an earful. 잔소리를 엄청 해 대잖아.

 

A: You look really stressed out. Is it because of the holidays?
B: Yeah. I love my relatives, but sometimes they're really annoying.
A: Was it your uncle again? Did you argue with him last time?
B: He gave me an earful. He keeps saying I should get married.

 

A: 엄청 스트레스 받고 있나 봐. 명절이라서 그래?
B: 맞아. 친척들을 사랑하지만, 때로는 정말 짜증 나.
A: 이번에도 작은 아버지 때문이야? 지난번에 다퉜다면서.
B: 잔소리를 엄청 해 대잖아. 자꾸 나더라 결혼을 해야 한대.
